Aerial Survey

Disaster Analysis

Purpose: Over so many years now, we have been witnessing natural disasters which occur due to seasonal occurrences, poor urban planning by the authorities and due to other man-made disasters. Any such disaster causes a huge human trauma, economic hemorrhage, innocent loss of life and the extent of damage is sometimes unmeasurable. Aerial survey is the best solution to get a quick view of the disaster occurred at a glance. In order to avoid such disasters or for better management during disasters, aerial survey can act as the best solution. Same can be used for :

Pre-Disaster Aerial survey

This method of aerial survey can act as a precaution to disaster in areas which are prone to disasters such as- floods, earthquake, active volcano, mudslides, bush fires, weak structures etc. The data details that are gathered by an aerial survey can act as a step towards the planning of avoiding any further disaster damages if the same is tentative. Further, the aerial survey also helps in arriving and calculating a possible outbreak of the same in accordance with the other relevant department data. It also can suggest solutions as the survey can be done continuously and reviewed any number of times in order to arrive at the required solutions by building a DEM(digital elevation model) model which will give the entire topographic 3D layout suggesting on the elevations and the slopes as seen at the site. This helps to:

  • Identify high risk areas
  • An evacuation plan before the disaster arrives
  • Collect the data of hard to reach areas.
  • A risk-assessment statistics can be formulated based on the survey data.
  • To assess the status of hospitals or other shelters in the area.

Managing Disaster by Aerial survey

This method of aerial survey helps to identify and deploy the rescue team based on the data received by which, less prone areas to disaster are identified and the search for the victims are carried out from that point. This helps to:

  • Identify safe access routes for emergency teams and victims
  • Lower cost of rescue to cover up maximum victims
  • Real time data of the disaster
  • Enhance capabilities to search for missing victims
  • Tracking on the rescue activities at site
  • Managing the deployment of rescue personnel.
  • Aerial photography of the site.

Post Disaster Management by Aerial survey

This is done in order to assess the extent of damage caused by a disaster. Here, aerial survey acts in the following way:

  • Locate the victims stuck due to the impact of the disaster
  • Provide the rescue team with better situational awareness and on the extent of damage that is caused by the disaster
  • Assess the damage caused in a short span of time and with increased efficiency
  • Plan on the distribution and supply of relief items and other materials as may be required at the disaster site.
  • Plan to remove the rubbles and debris caused due to the impact of the disaster and reform the area as was before.
  • Visualize the situation to asses the extent of havoc caused due to a disaster.
